Thread LOKx03: Dissolving Tension in Time
Love of Knowledge, Exercise 3: Dissolving Tension in Time, p. 23
Tension has a temporal structure linked to patterns centered on the concerns and desires of the self. Explore this structure as separate from the content of the narratives it sustains. Look for similar patterns in different situations, expanding your inquiry to include situations where there is no obvious tension. This exercise can also be practiced by taking postures that stimulate physical tension. Several exercises in Kum Nye Relaxation could serve this purpose.

The self shows up in strong opposition to a woman perceived as desirable. This opposition is a form of tension.
I noticed today when I ate and wasn't really hungry that there was a momentum present without much awareness. It seems that this momentum was a form of unnecessary tension, and could be reduced by relaxing while I eat. This might bring awareness to the fact of not being hungry any more.

Good-looking woman waitress at breakfast kept drawing my attention in a fixed way. Detracted from flexibility otherwise present. At a point it was clear that a preoccupation of attention was being set up, an obsession of awareness; a decision had to be made about whether to continue attending to her and perhaps do something about my attraction to her, or to let the attraction drop without significance.
I noticed some tension arising as I waited for a travel agent to check flight prices from Phoenix/Flagstaff. There was concern that the flight would be more than I was willing to pay. I was able to work with the tension as it arose, probably thanks to doing this exercise a bit for a few days now.
Sitting across the table from Dylan I got tense being aware of Dylan's constantly running his fingers through his hair, biting his nails, etc. I wanted to change his behavior somehow. The scenario was definitely fixed in quality, tight, stiff, object-oriented rather than including awareness of the self observing.
