Before publication of Time, Space, and Knowledge, Tarthang Tulku led seminars in which he explored the new vision. Beginning in 1978, teachers trained by the author offered TSK seminars, workshops, and long-term programs. The first of several nine-month programs was held in 1979 at the Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, and for several years after that there were annual intensives, both in Berkeley and elsewhere.

"As interest spread to other lands, workshops were organized in Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. Within a few years after publication, translations of the TSK book had appeared in Dutch, German, and Italian. and unofficial translations were circulating in the Former Soviet Union. There was also a positive reaction in the academic realm, and over the years Time, Space, and Knowledge has been adopted for use in more than a hundred university and college classes. . . . For many years now there have been ongoing programs based on TSK in The Netherlands, where some students have been actively engaged in study and practice for more than a decade. Informal study programs two years or longer in length have also been organized in Russia, Ukraine, Australia, and Germany, as well as in the United States. . . .

"A second book in the TSK series, Love of Knowledge, was published in 1987. This was followed in 1990 by Knowledge of Time and Space . . . . Intensive programs based on these books were held at the Nyingma Institute from 1988 through 1991, and translations of one or both titles are now underway in several countries." (pp. vii-ix, Visions of Knowledge)

In September, 1997 a group of people began a ten-month program sponsored by the TSK Association and based on readings and exercises in the book Time, Space, and Knowledge. Each month through June, 1998, there was a one- or two-day workshop meeting either in the San Francisco Bay Area or Santa Cruz, CA. Participants explored the entire text and practiced all the exercises in the book.

The TSK Association is sponsoring a similar nine-month program in 1998-99. The program is exploring different TSK readings, and began October 18, 1998 and will run through June, 1999.

Seminars and Workshops

Time, Space, and Knowledge: A Workshop Introducing a Transforming Vision of Reality

Time, Space, and Knowledge (TSK) does not:

So what is TSK?

When: This is a one day workshop, not currently scheduled.

Changing the Way We Change

The ordinary ego is incapable of keeping up with the accelerating changes presented by time. However, we can contact a deeper level of time that not only produces constant change, but also gives rise to all our experience, including the sense of self, separate objects, space, and the world. Contacting this dynamic of time gives considerably more leverage in transforming our lives than is possible by personal will power at the level of the self.

This is a one day workshop, not currently scheduled.

Extended Programs

1999-2000 Nine-month TSK Program

In October, 1999, the TSK Association began the third annual nine-month program based on readings and exercises in the TSK books.

This year the program is exploring different ways of being and allowing for change. "Since we consider ourselves to be separate objects in time, continuous in a changing world, we try to hold the 'self' and other familiar objects down, treating them as being relatively stable and fixed. This leads us to ignore much of the expressive and transforming character of time, and as a result, we cannot face up to change. . . . Our power to mold and change our environment is similarly restricted. . . . The inertia we generally experience, our resistance to change, derives from the fact that the 'self' we try to improve is simply a summary or generalization of many instantaneous presentations of 'time'. (pp. 23, 26, Dimensions of Thought, volume I)

If you realize that all of the features and presuppositions characteristic of a given experience need not dictate . . . the character of other moments of time, then you can begin to escape the ordinary pattern of time and knowledge. (p. xi) Time can then effect "a kind of effortless alchemical transmutation of all reality . . . Everything is immediately revealed as open, unbinding, and unobscuring, like the clearest and most frictionless of liquids. . . ." (pp. 50-51) "Techniques--attempts to force the issue, to improve, control, or achieve--cannot arrive at this understanding." (p. xlv) "Everything required for contacting freedom and everything required to remain in intimate contact with all 'points' of time is already being done." (p. xliii)

Each month there is a one-day workshop at Ballena Bay Marina in Alameda or a two-day workshop at a beautiful location next to the ocean in Santa Cruz. Participants are reading and practicing exercises from the TSK books, and dialoging with other participants between the monthly group meetings.

When: Second quarter meetings: Jan. 9, Feb. 6, Mar. 4-5. Third quarter: Apr. 2, May 7, June 3-4. Each one-day workshop will meet 9:30am-5pm. Two-day workshops will meet from 10am Saturday till 3pm Sunday.

Where: One-day workshops meet at the conference room in the Harbormaster's offices at Ballena Isle Marina, 1150 Ballena Blvd., Alameda. Two-day workshops meet at a private residence in Santa Cruz.

Donation: $225 suggested per quarter (donate less if appropriate for your circumstances); $200/quarter if $100 deposit is received three weeks before the quarter's first meeting. Deposit deadlines are Dec. 19 for the second quarter, and Mar. 12 for the third quarter.

Who: Facilitators are Steve Randall, Hal Gurish, and Tom Morse, students of the TSK vision for the past 20 years. For more information call the TSKA office at 510-352-5391, or email Steve Randall.

Study Group Leadership Conference and Retreat

The leadership conference will be held July 22-24. It will be an opportunity for TSK students who are interested in leading groups, or who are already leading groups, to practice together and learn more about facilitating groups. The conference will also be open to students who are not interested in leading groups. Venue is a privately owned 400-acre redwood forest between Fort Bragg (close to Mendocino) and Willits, California. We will make good use of the natural beauty of this peaceful valley formed by a creek and the north fork of the Noyo river.

A follow-up retreat will be held at the same place from Jul. 24-30. It's possible to attend either one or both of these events.

Suggested donation is $45/day, including lodging and meals. Scholarships are available.

Study Groups

A Virtual (Email) TSK Study Group

A TSK email study group has been active off and on since June, 1995. The dialog is based on readings and exercises in the TSK books. The moderator edits email contributions, creates a file for each chapter and topic thread, updates the topic files as new email is received, and makes the updated files available to participants. This enables people to join at different times, participate whenever they want, and have the benefit of previous participants' dialog. The service is available free of charge. For a listing of topic threads and the topic files, see the tskforum webpages.

'Real' TSK Study Groups

A study group can be started anywhere there are at least three people who are interested in studying TSK. The TSK Association may already have names of other interested people in your area, collaborates with groups such as the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and can provide an experienced contact person and support in setting up a group. TSKA can also set up a local introductory workshop if you wish. Contact the TSKA office at 510-352-5391 or email steve@manage-time.com.

TSK Programs Presented By Nyingma Centers

Programs in Holland

Two weekly classes are meeting three quarters of each year. There is one introductory class that meets on Monday evenings. This group is based on Love of Knowledge, a Dutch translation of which has been prepared. Joleen Vries leads this group. The second group, meeting Friday evenings, is for people with at least some basic TSK experience. This class works with themes and pieces of text from different books. Meindert Gijzen leads this group.

In addition, a Dutch TSK newsletter is being produced twice a year. For more information on these activities, contact Nyingma Centrum Nederland, Reguliersgracht 25, 1017 LJ, Amsterdam, Netherlands or email Meindert Gijzen.
