Thread 0003: Practical application of TSK
entry 0001:
[Carl Wittnebert, 8/25/98] One practical application of TSK is right before our eyes; it is Mastering Successful Work from Dharma Publishing in 1994. This book is neither Buddhism nor TSK, but it draws on both, going so far as to use the ubiquitous TSK phrase, "Body of Knowledge." The book's basic premise is that we do not acknowledge the power of time, with the result that our lives are impoverished.
We often go about our business as if we had a few extra minutes in our back pocket to pull out when we really need them. But an hour is sixty minutes and no more; a day is twenty-four hours, not twenty-five. . .Our time is limited, and each moment is irreplaceable. . .
Can we say that the implications of not-acknowledging are central to any application of TSK, whether it is Time, Space, or Knowledge that comes to the foreground?
entry 0002:
KTS, p. 56: Not knowing time, we let the patterns of time ignore knowledge. Since our knowing is not based in realization, we lack the will to act in ways that do not accord with the preestablished. We conform our knowing to time's ignoring, telling ourselves that we do not have time to do what must be done. Constantly making excuses, deceiving ourselves and others, we guarantee that real accomplishment will not come in our time.
entry 0003:
LOK, p. xxx: The TSK vision offers a highly practical, 'realistic' understanding of the way things are, producing a direct and immediate effect on the ways we act and the satisfaction available to us. Yet if inquiry succeeds in activating 'knowingness', a new and complementary perspective arises, in which the vision itself can be explored as a fiction to be enjoyed, a story that the reader can join in creating.

I did a TSK thing today, and I am so proud of myself ;) When I arrived at work, I saw steam coming from under the hood of my truck. Clearly not a good sign. My natural tendency, as with all tasks that promise to be unpleasant, was to procrastinate. Within an hour, I had put it in the back of my mind--"I'll take care of it tomorrow." But two of my co-workers had seen the steam and asked me about it. The realization dawned on me that I had to act immediately. So I did.
It turns out that the head gasket had ruptured. It also turns out that if you drive a car with a blown head gasket, exhaust gases get into the cooling system and wreck the engine.

entry 0006:
KTS, p. 446: Through Great Knowledge, expression expresses itself. Knowledge is not presented as the antidote to confusion; nor is it applied to 'make sense' of things; nor does it resolve conflict or work toward solutions. Free from purpose or intention, the Body of Knowledge freely commands Time and Space.
Whether we recognize these possibilities as meaningful in terms of ordinary knowledge may not matter. Though the unity of the 'field' might be understood as the central core of what is presented here, there is no one body that is unified: no 'one place' or 'one way', no 'one who knows'. Knowledge is simply Knowledge. We can participate, we can own, we can use, we can play-for all doing and all being is the 'aliveness' of the Body of Knowledge.
